November is Native American and Alaska Native Heritage Month. Throughout November, we celebrate the culture and heritage of these remarkable Americans. Who have deeply enriched the quality and character of our Nation. This commemorative month aims to provide a platform for Native people in the United States of America to share their culture, traditions, music, crafts, dance, and lives.
The way of life for the Native Americans changed greatly when the European settlers arrived, practically thrown to the side with no remorse. They were stripped of everything, their land, religious beliefs, loved ones, and substantially their basic rights. The situation since settlers arrived has not improved throughout the years. Currently, Natives are suffering without recognition. In recognition of National Native American Month, I will be informing you of one of the current situations native Americans are living in. A specific challenge is the Violence against women and children. About 46% of all Native American women have experienced physical abuse, including rape, stalking, and domestic violence. On some reservations, Native American women are murdered at a rate 10 times more than the nation’s average. Currently, in western states, Indigenous women are being targeted and falling victim to violence at alarming rates. They are going missing and are being raped and murdered. When these women go missing, reports are filed, yet days go by before there is any action taken by law enforcement, resulting in these young women not being found. Nevertheless, efforts have been made to prosecute non-Native men that subject Native American women to dating violence, domestic violence or rape on Indian reservations. Many people are working to raise awareness of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW). Therefore instead of just celebrating their culture, we must inform people of the struggles that Natives are going through. These challenges are experienced socially, economically, culturally and on many other fronts:
